The City Quiz & Walk project is a fun, engaging, interactive phone app development designed to enhance immigrants, ex-pats, and students’ cultural education. It began in September 2019 and is due for completion in September 2021.
City Quiz and Walk project, coordinated by Learnmera, is in its final stages of development. In the scope of the project, extensive research on mobile phone apps and gamified education has been conducted, and the development of apps for Helsinki, Paris, Vilnius, Lisbon and Athens has been completed. Now the project has reached its final stage of external pilot testing for the mobile apps.
The fun to use gamified education value is unquestionable, and the quiz and quest questions are informative to the local and the visitor alike. The pilot testing ensures that the app experience is of high quality, glitch-free and unhindered by errors.
All multiplier events for the phone app have taken place in August. The final multiplier event marking the launch of City Quiz-Helsinki is scheduled for Tuesday, August 31 at Apollo Street Bar, Mannerheimintie 16, Helsinki, from 17:00 – 19:00. The event is expected to draw 20 guests from the public, where refreshments and snacks will be served.

The kick-off meeting was held earlier this month, the meeting was held over Zoom and all partners from were present. This is a two-year project, running until 2023 and partners include:

The objectives of this project are to:
• Create a realistic learning environment for learners of a second language so as to motivate them to learn.
• Design, test and publish an innovative educational package based on AR technology for primary school teachers that will guide and support their English (or any other) as second language teaching.
• To provide quality training to primary school teachers on how to utilise the innovative educational package in traditional or virtual/online classroom.
Results will include:
• IO1: Desk research: A literature review comparing traditional approaches and augmented reality in language acquisition.
• IO2: A teacher handbook with lesson plans for language learning through AR.
• IO3: Augmented Reality application, with which we aim to generate a methodology that makes students an active part of learning, and also allows collaborative learning 2 training activities: C1 to train the VET trainers (3 training workers from each country) and C2 to train primary school teachers (5 teachers from each country), on the educational AR for EFL package developed during the project. The aim of these training activities is to maximize the impact of the project allowing them to use the application effectively and give participants the necessary training and skills.

The AWARDS (autonomy and well-aging reinforcement for the adult people with down syndrome) project is in its early stages, with the kick-off meeting happening only a few months ago.
In recent years, thanks to the developments of treatments, people with DS are now expected to live to being 60 years old. Because this is a relatively new phenomenon, there has not been much research in to parenting aging adults with DS. With this in mind, there is a lack of knowledge for families and carers of aging people with down syndrome. The project is concerned with support for families and professionals working with adults over 30 years of age with down syndrome.
There are two different results with a series of activities to be implemented for project AWARDS. The first result will involve creating a skills and interests test for adults with DS for proper professional and social orientation and developing multimedia training tools for healthy nutrition and physical exercises and sports training.
The second result will include creating training modules on sexual health and health protection, and an e-learning platform to host the project’s results. Training activities and conferences will also be held in the countries of the participating organisations.

The aim of the Integrating Digital Learning project is to integrate digital learning competences in to the education curriculum.
As a result of this project, we aim to raise 21st century competences, increase the digital information and data literacy competencies, improve digital communication and collaboration competencies, increase the competencies of digital content production, upgrade digital security competencies and increase digital problem-solving competencies.

The Indylan project is almost near completion and the final version of the mobile application will be available for users to download globally for free later this year.
It is well known that smartphones are becoming more and more popular for educating users of all ages within the EU. With this in mind, the Indylan app has been developed for users that speak English, Spanish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish. All these languages will be available on the one app.
The main purpose of the educational tool is to teach users about Europe’s most endangered languages, as well as educate them on the cultures. By creating the Indylan app, we will ensure the endangered languages will stay alive and be relevant in today’s modern society.
The endangered languages that will feature on the app include –
• Gaelic – ‘definitely endangered’
• Scots – ‘severely endangered’
• Cornish – ‘critically endangered’
• Basque – ‘severely endangered’
• Galician – a minority language
• Saami – ‘severely endangered’
The partners have been working on the project since 2019 and are currently in the process of uploading the 4,000 vocabulary items from the 100 different categories.

The City Quiz project began in 2019 with five partners based in the five countries who will feature in the app. In its later stages, City Quiz is almost complete and will be available for migrants, immigrants, expats and students to download later this year.
The City Quiz app is an innovative and unique learning tool designed to educate newcomers and teach them about the culture, traditions, and history of the city.
Initially the app has been created for the five capital cities of the partner countries listed below, however once launched, an app can be created for any city.
When using the app, users will be able to follow a map of the area, solve quizzes, and familiarize themselves with the places on which the questions are based.
The partners have been working hard on this project since 2019 and are currently in the final stages of uploading all content such as images from each capital city, and the questions and answers for the quizzes.

The LANGO (language on the go) project is designed to help newcomers and refugees integrate into society in an innovative and creative way. The app and material produced will focus on providing a language-learning solution that is free, fun, and easy to use for all levels of language proficiency.
When complete later this year, there will be four outputs from the project –
• Mobile app – the free and fun game app will provide solutions to language on the go and will be available in the five target languages and the ten support languages.
• Database – language learning material including extensive vocabulary glossaries on different topics in each partner language and English, which will be used for creating language material packages with different activities and exercises for the phone app and web portal.
• Web portal – Fully integrated with the mobile app, the web portal will include quizzes, games and lessons, along with audio visual content. A material bank, news and event area and forum for members will also feature on the portal.
• Audio visual content – ten two-minute animations depicting daily life are in the process of being created. These animations will appear on both the mobile app and web portal.
The five partner organisations are currently working on project LANGO, and all except Finland represent the target languages on the app and web portal.
The target languages are English, Dutch, French, Greek and Turkish. The ten support languages are Arabic, Sorani, Punjabi, Somali, Tigrinya, Urdu, Albanian, Pashto, Farsi and Kurmanji.
The LANGO material will launch later this year, the partners are currently in the process of uploading all the target and support languages on the mobile app and web portal.

Project ASSESS began in 2019 with the aim to develop innovative learning tools via an online platform for young EFL learners. The traditional learning methods of pen and paper tests can be viewed as outdated in today’s modern world, and not truly reflect the student’s real potential.
The main goal of the project is to bring a new approach to assessment. A wide variety of material has already been produced by the six partners from six countries, including colourful flashcards with images and text, illustrated worksheets, exams, and rubrics. The partners have also collected many images, all of which are currently in the process of being uploaded to the Online Exam Creator.
By using The Online Exam Creator (OEC), not only will EFL teachers have access to the material created by the partners, but they will be able to produce their own exams and downloadable content specific to their needs.
The OEC is very close to completion, and once complete we expect that many EFL teachers will have the desire to use this platform and the impact of this project will increase rapidly.

The STEM Labyrinth project is in the early stages, with work beginning in September 2020. The aim of this project is to develop high school students’ skills in science, technology, engineering and maths (the STEM subjects). STEM Labyrinth will help develop digital skills, critical thinking, problem solving, innovation and problem solving, all of which are needed more than ever in today’s world.
The seven partner countries have already spent many hours working on this project, including hours of research to ensure the final product challenges and develops the skills to gain a successful outcome for the students involved.
As part of the research for this project, a survey was sent regarding the status of STEM education in Finland to many STEM subject teachers in schools around the country. The majority of respondents said that STEM education was introduced in Finland mainly as an extracurricular activity and project activities, not so much as part of normal school education. Most respondents also said their school mainly used a model with no specific definition of STEM education, and the majority also said that their school had teachers certified in STEM education. More than half of the schools also had STEM laboratories.
Now the research has been completed, work has begun to create the app which is the main output of the project. The app will work by placing the user in a labyrinth and challenge them to solve puzzles until they reach the solution, whilst providing an educational experience to high school students.
