Nordic Sauna Map
Project duration 2026
This 1-year project aims to document, preserve, and disseminate the shared Swedish-Finnish sauna and winter bathing culture by creating an interactive digital map, a comparative trilingual report, and educational materials for schools in both countries. The project combines local documentation with cross-border collaboration, where both partners contribute their core competencies: Learnmera with language, pedagogy, and digital development, and B-Creative with cultural storytelling, photography, and audiovisual production.
In particular, the project aims to increase understanding of the cultural and historical significance of sauna and winter bathing in the Nordic region and make this living tradition accessible to future generations through modern digital tools and shared experiences across national borders.
Additionally, the project will create three key deliverables:
- An interactive digital map featuring 100-180 public saunas in Sweden and Finland with photos, texts, and audio clips
- A comparative report in three language versions (Swedish, Finnish, English)
- Three trilingual lesson plans for schools
The project includes field visits in Sweden and Finland, plus a joint study trip where the Swedish team travels to Finland to experience and document the authentic smoke sauna, conducting interviews with “sauna masters” and winter bathers in authentic environments.
